finding your purpose through ikigai

Ikigai and Finding Your Purpose

Examination leads to clarity. And, Ikigai, a Japanese concept that means “a reason for being,” is a great way to surface some of the clarity that we often lack.  It is a method by which we can start to map out our interests, values, strengths, and more so we can better chart our way forward.

By taking some time to deeply reflect on each of the four areas on the ikigai map (as they pertain to you and your experience of life), you can discover deeper insights into key aspects of yourself that can lead you toward greater self discovery—and potential direction for your future.

Start by finding some quiet—both inside and outside yourself. Next respond to each the circles and shaded areas, noticing where and how they overlap. Remember to be purposeful and honest with yourself. Feelings are a great place to start and spark good thinking. Ikigai exercises work best, however, if you are specific and actionable. If you note something that you are good at or something that you love, think of a concrete memory to back up your thinking. If you think of something the world needs, think of an actual example that illustrates that need. As you fill things out and as you notice areas of overlap, you can start to get a fuller picture of who and what you are and what direction it might lead you. Seeing where everything intersects can shine a light on your true purpose.

Of course, no colorful exercise can give you your actual purpose for living. Practices such as this can, however, help illustrate our potential directions and help us realize who and what we are. Try it, welcome a sense of enjoyment into the process, and see where it leads!
